Refinishing beat-up alloy wheels

Last week I bought a beat-up set of wheels to use for snow tires for my 1995 Subaru Legacy. They had been curbed pretty badly and the clear coat had peeled. In this video, I strip off the bad clearcoat, clean up the wheels, and then prime and paint them. The final result isn’t perfect, but for a total investment of around , which includes the wheels and materials, I’m very happy. Check out my blog: mercedesdieselguy.blogspot.com

Flowforming alloy wheels with DENN flowforming machine

DENN MANUFACTURING: This is a CNC operated 3 roller flowforming/spinning machine. The machine is capable of spinning both forged and cast preforms and pancakes for both Al and Mg alloys. A fully robotized loading/unloading bay is available for optimal production integration. The unit is equipped with an interface that is “plug and play” with all other hardware of the production unit such as the rotoforging press and the loading/unloading robots. SPINNING CAST PREFORMS: On the cast preforms both the inner and outer rims are spun fully automatically and the whole process is finished in 30 seconds. Since the material on the rims is spun, the actual weight of the cast preform can be optimized, reducing its weight and the used raw material. Another advantage is that different wheel widths can be spun from one preform using the excess material from the blank. In this case the inventory of blanks is reduced since one blank can be used for different wheel sizes. Typically tooling would need to be developed to cast each individual wheel size as well as inventory that needs to be planned for each wheel size. SPINNING FORGED PANCAKES: In the initial operation the rotoforged pancake or disk is first split and then the inner and outer rims and tire beads are spun. This is done in one operation without removal of the wheel from the machine. The rotoforged pancakes can be used for different wheel sizes reducing the inventory of blanks.
